On the McCandless Surname
The McCandless surname is found in Ireland (as McCandless and M'Cuindlis) and Scotland (as McCandlish). The name is relatively rare, its original meaning is not accurately known, and there are no verifiable clan or sept associations connected with its origin. The Rev. Patrick Woulfe, in Irish Names and Surnames (1923) categorizes it in the fourth class of names, comprised of a noun and qualifying adjective, although the meanings are lost to time. Nevertheless, he has the following listing for the name:
MacCuindilis, MacCuinlis - IV - MacCandlis, MacCandless, MacCanlis, MacAndless, &c; 'son of Cuindlear' (an old Irish personal name). Variant O Cuindlir.
A transliteration of the fourth rank name Cuindlear from contemporary Irish Gaelic gives: Cuin or Cuin-t' (When or when do) and lear (Sea or ocean). There is obviously more work needed - and an old northern dialect dictionary would go far towards resolving this conundrum. The best website I've found for the origins of the McCandless name is at: Stanton McCandlish's Cuindlis Web Resources
In Scotland, traces are to be found in the west highlands and along the coast through the lowlands.
